About Backcountry

Power system experience, brought back to the field.

Backcountry Powerworks was created around a simple idea: sophisticated power systems deserve sophisticated service.

Field test equipment on a Colorado mountain site

Modern homes increasingly combine solar, batteries, generators, inverters, transfer equipment, controls, communications, and loads from multiple manufacturers.

When something goes wrong, replacing components isn't always the answer. Understanding how the system works together is.

Kody Calkins

Founder / Power Systems Specialist

Kody has spent more than two decades working across solar, battery storage, power electronics, controls, and distributed energy systems.

His experience includes manufacturer-level technical support, field commissioning, applications engineering, system integration, and large-scale battery energy storage.

Earlier in his career, Kody served in senior technical and field roles supporting off-grid systems at SMA America, including the Sunny Island platform and complex PV-battery-generator systems.

Backcountry Powerworks brings that depth of experience directly to homeowners and property operators who need someone capable of understanding the complete system.

How we work

Measure first.
Recommend second.

Every engagement starts with understanding how the system is actually operating.

Depending on the system, that may include battery condition, operating history, inverter data, fault logs, generator behavior, communications, controls, transfer operation, and system configuration.

We document what we find, explain what matters, and provide a prioritized path forward.

  1. 01

    Understand

    System history, architecture, and symptoms.

  2. 02

    Measure

Data, configuration, and actual operating behavior.

  3. 03

    Diagnose

Identify root cause rather than replacing parts by assumption.

  4. 04

    Document

Clear findings and recommendations you can keep.
